Summary

Chapter 5 shifts focus to Esti Hogos, an eccentric young child who sometimes likes to sneak away from her home and explore the surrounding area on her own. Her parents often place stringent restrictions on her because they view her as reckless and unintelligent. Her parents are also unnerved by her dislike of games and other typical children’s pastimes. Esti often spends time alone in a disused pigeon loft in order to be alone from people. She is often bullied by her older brother Sanyi, but she always maintains a slight hope that he might be kind to her someday.
