John Ross, the Knight of the Word, comes to Hopewell, Illinois, on a Greyhound bus. He has tried to protect humanity for ten years now, and faces his biggest challenge. He checks into a room at a local motel. John lives in the present while awake, but when asleep he lives in the future. This makes it hard to keep his memories straight. Ross goes out and comes to Josie's Restaurant. He is still hunting a demon who has slipped through his fingers before. John finds himself attracted to Josie Jackson.
