The Pit

This pit is a symbol of mass execution. The way that Jack and others were trucked to the airport where this pit was located and then lined up and shot is reminiscent of the Holocaust. Jack survived the execution attempt to visit the pit nineteen years later when his daughter was assisting with the excavation of the mass grave.

The Aurora Lights

These aurora lights represent a change in human behavior. The people who saw the lights generally become the ones who become violent and join gangs that kill the people who did not see the aurora.
