Maggie

Maggie is the main character and first person narrator of the novel. At the novel’s start, Maggie is 29 years old. She has just separated from her husband Jon. Although she and Jon were only married for 608 days, the two had been together since they were 19. Therefore, in the wake of Jon’s departure, Maggie finds herself disoriented and unmoored. She has never lived on her own before and quickly realizes that she does not know who she is on her own either.

Instead of confronting her heartbreak, Maggie develops a series of avoidance mechanisms to dull her upset. Over the course of her first month alone, Maggie avoids her research work at the university. She rarely leaves the apartment. She spends most of her time at home alone, surfing the internet, following people on social media, texting, and watching television.
