Summary

Chapter t is titled “ds,” and based on information gleaned from the book’s appendix, seems to have been entirely written by the author. In number 503, he references how desperate he was to live a life defined by art, and comments on how, over time, came to realize that “the beauty of … art underwritten by reality hunger [is that it] looks and is more interesting, and life, astonishingly enough, starts to be livable” (166). In 504, he describes how an intense relationship with a young woman named Rebecca was made even more intense when he read her journal, and discovered how deeply and intensely she felt about him. Later, when he confessed that he had read the journal and then stopped, he realized that the language was as stimulating to him as the relationship.
