Summary

In Chapter 34, Taylor calls Thema, Abeo’s aunt, and invites her to a graduation ceremony at the Eden Rehabilitation Center. Joseph and Thema drive to Ketak, to Eden. They see girls of all ages with many bearing scars from their servitude. A few are on crutches and one girl is missing an ear. Taylor shares the story of Eden and then the graduates come out. They each have butterfly broaches pinned to their dresses. Thema and Abeo recognize each other. They hug and walk away hand-in-hand. Thema tells Abeo she’s grown into a beautiful young woman over and over again.

Thema and Joseph take Abeo back to their house in Port Masi in Chapter 35. After dinner, Abeo asks if they can talk right away. Thema starts to tell Abeo that her mother is dead, but Abeo appears to already know. “She’s...
