Summary

Chapter 17

Ethan dreams of being tortured during the Iraq War. He is ultimately rescued by a SEAL team, and Ethan has his revenge by shooting his main tormentor and rapist, Aashif, in the face.

Chapter 18

Ethan wakes up in a helicopter, traveling with Jenkins, Pope, and Pam. Jenkins compliments Ethan on looking better, and on surviving. He says he is going to show Ethan what everything is all about. They land in a clearing. Pope gives Jenkins a Magnum .357 to carry. They are in the ruins of the city of Boise. Ethan has been in suspended animation for 1,814 years. Jenkins explains that in 1971, a geneticist named David Pilcher realized human DNA was becoming corrupted, which would lead to rapid, macro-evolutionary changes.
