The Cave (Pastoralia)

Most of “Pastoralia” takes place in a fake cave that serves as the exhibit in which Janet and the protagonist perform. The cave is part of a larger entertainment complex. Janet and the protagonist are employed to dress and act like ancient cavepeople, even when there are no patrons passing through the room. They are prohibited from ever breaking character while in the cave, although Janet often does.

Separate Area (Pastoralia)

When not working, Janet and the protagonist reside in their respective Separate Areas, which are adjacent to the fake cave. These areas are each equipped with a fax machine, which Janet and the protagonist can use to communicate with management and with their loved ones. Janet and the protagonist are prohibited from leaving the cave or entering their Separate Areas while the exhibit is open.
