Summary

During the night, the protagonist receives a fax from Janet. She says that Nelson has felt very sick for the past day; he also repeated said, “Where is Daddy, why is he never here?” (34). The cost of Nelson’s medication has also increased. The protagonist has trouble sleeping due to stress, but he tries not to dwell on the problems too much, for if he does not sleep well, his work performance could decline, thereby potentially increasing his chances of being fired. The next day, Janet apologizes for everything that happened the previous day involving her son, and she thanks the protagonist for not reporting her to management. The protagonist leaves to dispose of his and Janet’s waste, and he sees Marty playing catch with his son Eddie, who is home for school vacation. Marty’s son talks about how nice everyone...
