Chapter 6 Summary

Dirk finally reports for duty and finds himself in a lavishly furnished underground bunker, accessed through a Quonset hut. Hunter tells Dirk that they think the Russians are in the area trying to find out where the Starbuck is, since the Starbuck was the most advanced nuclear sub of the day when it was lost on its test run. Denver and Borland, his staff, join Hunter and tell Dirk the stories of other ships lost in the Pacific Vortex. Pitt reads the file on a ship called the Lille Marlene, the only ship that went down in the Pacific Vortex to have sent a distress signal. A Spanish freighter trying to help found the passengers and staff all dead, and the ship blew up and sank taking the Spanish boarding party with it.
