Chapter 5 Summary

While getting ready to report to Admiral Hunter, Dirk decides to carry a weapon, since he is beginning to understand the implications of the alteration with Summer. He detours on the way and stops to see an old friend, George Papaaloa at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Polynesian Ethnology and Natural History. Dirk wants to know what George knows about the Pacific Vortex. George tells him about the legend of the mythical island of Kanoli, an Atlantis-like island. Leaving the museum, Dirk realizes he is being followed. "Pitt is ready to dismiss the trailing truck as fantasy - his subconscious was beginning to see enemy agents, complete with trench coats and beady eyes, lurking behind every clump of philodendron" (pg. 54).
