Summary

Jude and Mama call Baba to show him how she looks wearing the hijab. Jude asks if Baba has heard from Issa, but he tells her he has not. Layla’s mother tells Jude that she looks beautiful in her hijab and Aunt Michelle continually reminds Jude that she does not have to wear it if she does not want to. Jude is proud to wear her scarf.

The ESL teacher, Mrs. Ravenswood, is one of the only Americans who does not act “suspicious” of Jude’s hijab. Jude is overjoyed when she gets a part in the play, a bigger part than Sarah received. Sarah is unkind to Jude about her role, insinuating that she only got the role because of her accent and that she will not be allowed to wear her scarf during the performance.
