Summary

Jude and her mother land in Cincinnati. Jude attempts to speak to the immigration agent, but she struggles. They manage to make it through, and Jude is grateful to be in the United States despite feeling sad about leaving Syria. Jude meets her uncle and is surprised by his flashy outfits and car. Mazin meets them at the airport with his wife, Michelle, and their daughter, Sarah. Jude’s uncle drives them to Clifton. Sarah laughs at how Jude speaks until Michelle reprimands her.

Mazin is a doctor, so Mama, Michelle, Jude, and Sarah spend the days together. Aunt Michelle shows Mama and Jude all around town. Jude begins to grow attached to the sounds and scenery of the house.
