Summary

In Chapter 11, August and her roommates concoct a plan to save Pancake Billy’s; they decide to raise money to buy the diner’s building by throwing a drag show at Delilah’s. August immerses herself in the fight to save the iconic diner from gentrification. One night, when August answers her mother’s phone call, Suzette tells her that her grandmother died and left her a large sum of money. August is confused and angry when her mother admits that her grandparents tried to make contact with her. Suzette was afraid that her parents would be judgmental and wanted to protect August from the same conservative outlook that drove Augie away and made her feel isolated as an adolescent.
