Summary

In Chapter 1, August moves to New York and finds a room to rent in a Brooklyn loft. She is initially skeptical of moving into an apartment with Niko, Myla, and Wes, who live in the other rooms in the loft. August moved to New York to finish her degree and thought the metropolis city would allow her to disappear into her schoolwork. She reluctantly accepts Niko and Myla’s invitation to join them for brunch at Pancake Billy’s House of Pancakes. At the all-night diner, August mentions that she needs to find a job and Myla convinces the waiter, Winfield, to give August an application. August meticulously plans her commute to the university and memorizes the subway line of the Q train. Despite her careful planning, August’s morning goes awry when she trips on her way to the subway platform...
