Deception

The theme of deception runs through the novel One False Move from several different directions. The life of Brenda Slaughter, one of the main characters, has been filled with deception since she was a young girl. Now a grown woman in medical school and poised on the brink of a career in basketball, Brenda's life begins to unravel, the lies that have been told and the secrets that have been kept finally coming undone.

Brenda begins receiving threats, and Myron Bolitar is commissioned by Norm Zuckerman to help keep her safe. Myron agrees to do so, at first because of the opportunity to become Brenda's agent, then because he begins to care for her.
