Summary
Chapter Five is called “Resistance” and begins with a series of descriptions of the destruction of the infrastructure of civilian life in Gaza, such as universities and mosques, followed by crimes committed against Palestinian civilians. The narrative returns to Akkad’s time covering legal proceedings in Guantanamo Bay. He recalls a mix up in which he was once taken to board Air Force One instead of a plane to Guantanamo, causing alarm among security staff when the error was pointed out to them. He mentions a story about some men from the Muslim Uyghur minority group, who were fleeing persecution from the Chinese government. They were imprisoned there due to a series of errors that everyone involved was willing to admit were mistakes. However, for various political reasons, it was impossible to rectify the mistakes.
