Summary
One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This opens with an account of a young girl being rescued from the rubble of a building that has been destroyed by the Israel Defense Forces. Believing she is already dead, the girl asks the men carrying her on a stretcher if they are taking her to the cemetery. One of the men replies, “Mashallah”. The author reflects on the meaning of the phrase, which cannot be directly translated into English, but can mean both “What has happened is what God willed” and “Look at this wonderful thing that God has done” (4).
