Summary

Felix dreams he is at home asleep in his own bed. He wakes to find he is in a haystack with Zelda. Zelda, who is bossy, has woken Felix and tells him she is hungry. They are eating the bread Mr. Kopek gave Felix when Felix hears voices. He sees people who are wearing white armbands with a blue Jewish star being forced by Nazi soldiers to hurry as they carry their belongings. He believes the other people are Jewish booksellers being forced to walk to the city.

Felix hears a scream and sees that a soldier has a gun pointed at Zelda. The soldier forces Felix and Zelda to join the crowd of walking people. Felix looks for his parents in the crowd, but is unable to locate them. Zelda complains her feet hurt. Felix sees she is wearing only bedroom slippers...
