Chapters 9 through 12 Summary

In chapter nine, Jem says she Spider are among hundreds of people who turn and stare at the explosion. Then Spider realizes that Jem had known something was going to happen and he demands to know how. Jem realizes people are staring at Spider as he's screaming at her and she tries to calm him. They briefly scuffle and Spider refuses to let her go until she answers his questions. They walk along the canal and Jem thinks about the situation. She says that Spider is "the closest thing I've ever had to a friend", and wonders if she should trust him. She decides she will and tells him her story.

In chapter ten, Spider is initially unwilling to believe Jem's story. Spider eventually comes to accept and believe what Jem says as fact. He realizes that Jem and his grandmother...
