Summary

The first part of this section of the book has three components. The first is titled “Lavender,” and is subtitled “Now.” Third-person, present-tense narration describes Lavender, working outside at the commune, sixty-three years old, pausing in her work as she hears a sound – “an animal, dying in the gut of the woods” (277). The second is titled “Saffy,” and is also subtitled “Now.” Third-person, present-tense narration describes Saffy’s preparations to attend what seems to be a funeral, and how they are interrupted by a text from Blue, saying that the execution is about to happen. Saffy recalls an earlier phone conversation with Blue, who nervously seems to be asking for permission to attend the execution.
