Summary

The first part of this section of the book is titled “6 Hours,” and returns to the second-person, present-tense narration describing the last day of Anson Packer. He is taken from his cell and walked towards the exit, confident that Shawna will do what they agreed to do about his Theory (i.e., that she will make sure it gets to the people who can and will publish it) and also confident, despite Shawna’s apparent discomfort, that she has followed through on their plan. When he is taken outside, Packer is surprised by the power of all the things he feels he has not seen for years – clouds, the smell of car exhaust, bright sunshine. As he is bundled into the van for transport, he again contemplates how close he is to freedom, and how confident he is that Shawna has done...
