Summary

In Chapter 17, Tiller, Pong, and Lucky traveled to Drum Kappagoda's property, which was "situated in a valley somewhere between Shenzhen and Dongguan" (292). Remembering the place makes Tiller think about scent memory.

Drum told Constance to show Tiller around. During the tour, Tiller and Constance talked openly. Constance even asked if he had a mother. Tiller felt "rocked by her question" (299). In the kitchen, Tiller met the cook, Chilies. He gave Tiller candies. When they got to Tiller's room, Tiller felt strange. Eventually he realized the candy was drugged. Constance helped Tiller undress. Tiller was immobile on the bed. Then she performed a bizarre inspection on the entirety of his naked body.

In Chapter 18, thinking about his "stay at Drum Kappagoda's lodge" confuses Tiller's sense of self (314). While there, he lost what had once defined him.
