Summary

In Chapter 13, “Cassie, 2017,” Cassie tells Lore she will come back to Laredo in a couple weeks because Cassie cannot afford to stay. Cassie and Lore arrange to have a daily phone call at 6 pm. At home, Cassie and Duke discuss how Duke has not met Cassie’s family. Cassie remembers seeing Andrew for the first time after leaving college and how Andrew did not recognize Cassie. Cassie and Lore continue their discussions and Cassie is impressed by Lore’s memory and wonders if the details include “imagined re-creations” (144). After trying to talk to Mateo and Gabriel, Mateo finally calls Cassie and asks to meet. Cassie meets Mateo at the veterinary clinic where Mateo works.
