Part I, The Ashes

Chapter 1: The story opens as a girl, 17 year old Katniss Everdeen, stares down at the ashes from the shoes once worn by her sister Prim. District 12 has been almost completely destroyed. The only place that survives is the Victor's Village, where important people might stay when they have business in the Capitol center.

The girl has been discouraged by the powers that be in District 13 from returning to District 12 but Katniss feels that she has to go, making it a condition of her cooperation. Plutarch Heavensbee, the Head Gamemaker and organizer of the Capitol rebels, finally gives in to the girl's demands.

Katniss thinks about what has happened to her and her city. Katniss had participated in the Hunger games and escaped. Now she stands looking at her ruined city while invisible hovercraft...
