Summary

In the first section, Precrime Commissioner John Anderton receives a visit from Ed Witwer, who has been newly assigned to be his secretary and to replace Anderton as Commissioner whenever Anderton decides to retire. Anderton immediately distrusts Witwer because he assumes the younger man to be after his job. Anderton gives Witwer a tour of Precrime, and the two discuss its history and accomplishments. Anderton, the inventor and founder, discovered a way to transform the precognitions of three vegetable-like mutants into data that helps the Precrime division catch criminals of all sorts before they commit crimes. At the end of their tour and discussion, Anderton looks at the top card of data taken from the precogs and is alarmed to find his own name: it has been predicted that he will commit a murder within a week.
