Summary

Chapter 20, "Carlisle" chronicles Carlisle's history as a vampire. He initially tried to destroy himself upon his transformation yet there are few ways to kill a vampire. Edward describes Carlisle's immortal life as a "quest to subdue his nature, to become a blessing to mankind rather than a parasite" (452). Edward confessed his transgression from a life of abstinence, yet Bella still does not balk at his vampiric tendencies. He also flashes back to his vigilante days in which he would kill deviant humans to feed. The two then head to Edward's bedroom where they are interrupted by Alice's invitation to play baseball in a lightning storm.

In Chapter 21, "The Game" Bella attends a baseball game in an open field. First Edward brings her home, only to find Jacob and Billy Black in the driveway. Edward kisses Bella to flaunt his self-control and put Billy...
