Dogs Can Laugh in Heaven Summary

In this chapter, Phoebe relates the events of her first day back at school after the memorial service. She threatens a sixth-grader whom she hears refer to Mick as the "dead kid". Phoebe could tell people were looking at her throughout the day. By lunchtime, however, no one had told her they were sorry about Mick's death. When Phoebe finally does talk to her friends about the way they are acting, they react in ways that are embarrassing or stupid. Phoebe decides to leave them alone.

After lunch, Phoebe is still sitting in her seat with her head down when the remainder of the students leave the cafeteria. Zoe suggests she ask the nurse to let her go home. Once in the office, however, the principal takes Phoebe into her office and talks to Phoebe...
