Chapter 9 Summary

In Chapter 9, while looking for her history book under James's bed, Naomi finds an unopened letter from the film school at USC. When she asks James about it, he gets mad, but opens it and finds out he is accepted. Ace walks up to Naomi at her locker to find out if she's trying out for tennis and James starts a fight with him. When James accidentally elbows Naomi in the eye, Will steps in to try to break up the fight. James and Ace receive suspension and Naomi and Will receive after school detention. Naomi remembers that she did buy the record player for Will—for the records that were Will's father but that Will doesn't have a player to play them.

The weekend before Valentine's Day, Naomi takes James to a drive-in move and dinner in Poughkeepsie for his birthday...
