Structure

Mama’s Boy is divided into three parts plus a prologue. Each of the three parts represents a different part of Lance and Anne’s lives. Part I is about Anne’s childhood and early adult years which overlap with Lance’s childhood until the point where Jeff joins the family and they move from Texas to California. Part II is about Lance’s teen and young adult years, his coming-out, the rise of his career, and his involvement in the fight for marriage equality. This section is arguably the broadest in its scope, though Parts I and II are similar in length with ten and eleven chapters respectively.
