Summary

In Pages 177 - 231, the narrator's father takes her ring and demands that she give it to her sister (177). He launches into an increasing number of tirades. It is snowing, and the narrator knows "the snow is meant to bury" her (177). She will not be found.

The narrator rents a room "from a young girl," who the narrator falls in love with (179). She later encounters Melanie. She is pregnant, and wants to marry the narrator's father.

The narrator is trapped in her father's prison. She will burn up and die.

A window opens. She sees a cemetery. Everything feels like a performance (181).

Malina says she has lost control of her imagination. She tries explaining about her father and the ring. She cries, wanting him to believe her. She realizes she has only one life.
