The lab restroom where Olive went to take out her contacts is the place where she met Adam for the first time. Because Olive’s eyes were watering and she could not see clearly, she did not realize to whom she was talking. She assumed he was another grad student. It was only when Holden mentioned that Adam had met Olive three years earlier and had talked about her since that time that Olive realized it was Adam who encouraged her to attend graduate school.
