Summary

In Chapter 49, officials make plans to rebury those who were unearthed, paying close attention to the religious preferences of the dead. They choose a pastor and a rabbi who include some “nondenominational words of remembrance.” To be sure they have everyone covered, they include a woman who presides at pagan festivals. Some believe they are worrying too much since the souls of all these people are long gone. Gilda, Carla, and Julie attend, standing on one side of the cemetery. Lorna and Armand arrive on the other side. It begins to rain and the pagan priestess rushes through her words. Gilda falls, humiliated but assuring the others she is not hurt. As she walks back to the house, she is seized anew at the injustice of her situation. That night, she has pink discharge again. Amy and Ran are just beginning the trip...
