Summary

In Chapter 43, Ran is in constant contact with a colleague in Paris who is monitoring Gilda's health. Julie and Carla discuss Gilda's indifference to the baby and to Ian. In late November, Gilda begins having headaches, which could be a sign of preeclampsia. Gilda does not think about her pregnancy except when the baby's movements force her. She wants the baby to be born soon and cannot imagine herself mothering it. Others involved are torn between staying in Paris and returning to America. In December, Gilda continues to argue for staying. She has been tormented a bit at school – that her wealth is the only reason she is in the exclusive program – and it has become a matter of pride that she excels in the final exams.
