The Cold Peace

The Cold Peace is symbolic of unfair laws that go overboard to deal with situations. Because faeries were involved in a war against the Shadowhunters, the government enacted the Cold Peace which prohibited interaction with all faeries and resulted in exile for half-faeries, including Mark and Helen, despite the fact that they were not involved.

Cortana

Cortana is the name of Emma's sword, which is symbolic of her status as a Shadowhunter, her power, and her family history. The sword becomes more powerful in this novel with Emma using it to kill a member of the faerie riders though no one has ever killed one before. She also breaks a priceless instrument of the Shadowhunter culture, the Mortal Sword, using Cortana. The sword also represents Emma's attitude that she is invincible.
