Summary

Chapter 1

The main character, Teddi, is down from South Carolina to visit her mother in Kansas. Teddi is hopeful that she’ll be able to repair the relationship she has with her mother. She mentions wanting to talk about her younger brother, Josh, implying that he has passed away at some point. Several years earlier, Teddi’s father passed away, and now her mother lives alone. Teddi keeps trying to get her to come up and visit, but her mother always declines. She criticizes Teddi’s lifestyle, believing that her job as an antique dealer isn’t real work. The two are interrupted when her mother’s best friend, Stella arrives. The three have dinner and Teddi goes off to walk in the woods, remembering when she used to do the same thing with her grandparents.
