Jeremy

Jeremy is the main character and first person narrator of the short story "Liberation Day." In the world that Mr. and Mrs. U. have created for Jeremy, Jeremy is a Speaker. As a Speaker, Jeremy is given a limited number of words he is allowed to use in particular and limited circumstances. Most often, Jeremy is participating in Performances curated, staged, and supervised by Mr. U. For example, when Mr. U. programs Jeremy to the Topic City, Jeremy is supposed to Speak into this Topic in a manner dictated by Mr. U. Although Jeremy says that Speaking is "not a competition," he believes that he is more skilled at Speaking than his fellow Speakers, Craig and Lauren (10). He argues that he is better than Craig and Lauren because he prepares before the Performances of the chosen Topics, "getting to know my City better by thinking about it" (10). The...
