Summary

The book opens on a married couple in their 50s, Alexandr and Christine. They were listening to music when the phone rang and Christine went to answer it. On the other end was her best friend Lydia, who said that her husband, Zachary, had a heart attack at the art gallery where he worked and died in the ambulance en route to the hospital. Christine returned to Alex, who was Zachary's best friend, and told him what happened. He held her. Christine got in a cab and went to the hospital to meet Lydia. Once there, she consoled her friend and the two women returned to Alex and Christine's house, discussing how they would tell Lydia and Zachary's daughter, Grace.
