Summary

This part of the book consists of a series of diary entries and letters, written in first-person narration.

1 May. Inuk describes arriving at the prison, where there is “the distinctive smell and the feeling of suffering” (35). He immediately realizes he has to escape, and that he needs to make a plan. He describes being watched by the inmates, who remind him of animals, “ready to bite. They want to infect me, make me a mad dog too” (35). He realizes that he cannot make a single mistake, or he will die, and that he has to sacrifice his soul to survive. He signs himself “Inuk” (35)

24 May. Inuk plans for this to be the day that he escapes. The inmates smell. His body is scarred and swelling. He imagines the abuse, the rape, and the murderous death that awaits him if he does not...
