Summary

Joan’s mother and Nanny bring Joan breakfast. Joan’s mother scolds her for showing up unannounced. Joan tears up, moved by the sight of the food.

The number of coronavirus cases increases in China. Fang’s family prepare for their Chinese New Year bash on February 1st. Joan attempts to make small talk with Fang’s children but fails. When Joan tells Fang she does not intend to stay for the party, he tells her, “Suit yourself” (124). Joan spends the evening watching Friends in the guesthouse.
