Summary

In Chapter 1, other children are scared of Aven because she was born without arms, but at home, her she was normal to her parents. She could “do most everything everyone with arms could do” (3). Aven “got so tired of telling [people] the same boring story” about her arms, and she began to make up more fantastical versions of how she lost her arms (5). She felt at home in Kansas and “never imagined my parents would make me leave” (7).

In Chapter 2, Aven’s dad “told me he wanted to apply for a job as a theme park manager in Arizona,” and when she protests, reminds her that she was “born there” (8,9). He got the job and the family moved to Arizona.
