Chapter 1 Summary

Jack Fountain is at his high school when his friend Diana Murray tells him that she needs to talk with him. Jack assumes it is about his three-year-old brother, Tristan—Tris for short. Diana tells Jack that his aunt Cheryl is planning on redoing Jack's closet. This sends Jack home to save his dead father's work boots, cell phone, wallet and watch from winding up in the trash. When Jack arrives at the house, he saves his father's belongings and overhears the conversation between his aunt and an unknown man in the living room. The man is talking about putting Tristan on television and about following the "older brother" or Jack. Jack concludes that his aunt has sold Tris to television.
