Summary
In 1994, Laka begins performing political activism alongside Tony, who has been released from prison, and David, whom Laka was reunited with following his return to Hawai`i after Vietnam. Both men have begun to live with her, Hulali, and Malia, and the five of them consider themselves a family unit.
In 1995, a year later, Laka comes across a statement from Hulali (who continues to work as a prominent political figure) praising the Apology Resolution and grows angry, but becomes even angrier when she sees that Hulali has received a letter from Hi`i. Laka confronts Hulali and tells her the full story of what happened in Maui. When Hulali goes to bed without another word, Laka pens her op-ed.
The local population of Hilo begins to gather in protest of the government’s sanctioning of new development. Their concerns are broadly dismissed. The...
