Summary

In the wake of Hulali’s gesture, Hi`i moves to Los Angeles and enrolls at UCLA. She marries a Hawaiian man named Jacob and has two daughters, Ruth and Emma, before Jacob dies suddenly of pancreatic cancer. After Jacob dies, Hi`i reaches out to her family in accordance with her husband’s last wishes, and Hulali sends Malia to Los Angeles to accompany Hi`i while she grieves. When Hi`i arrives at the airport, Malia greets her cautiously before hugging Ruth and Emma. Once the girls are asleep, Hi`i tries to approach Malia and apologize for leaving Hilo. Malia responds angrily and tells Hi`i she will never forgive her.

When Hi`i drops Malia off at the airport, Malia gives Hi`i a newspaper clipping from home. Hi`i realizes that Malia does not know the full story...
