Summary

In Chapter 24, Dirk resented the von Koenigs for releasing him from their staff. He encountered a farmer who invited Dirk to join him as he traveled toward Meersburg in his wagon. Dirk met Gerwig Pfeiffer, who invited Dirk into his home. The following morning, in Chapter 25, Dirk met Herr Pfeiffer’s two sons, Franz and Moritz, who were eight and five years old, respectively. The boys looked through Dirk’s bag and found his gnome-knife. They did not listen to Dirk when he told them to leave his belongings alone, insisting that the house and everything in it was theirs. In Chapter 26, Gerwig Pfeiffer spoke with Dirk about his new job. Dirk almost caught a glance of Pfeiffer’s wife, Frau Pfeiffer, but she disappeared before he could see her.
