Summary

The four heroes set out with each facing different obstacles. Valerian is climbing a mountain but he soon falls into a crevasse. Irmgaal is in a land with lava and “choking mists” (19). He has to depend on his sword, Zorkam, to make a path. Ortzog is in a land covered with snow and ice where he faces brutal cold. He uses his chains to break through walls of ice. Blimflim is in a prairie at first, but it soon becomes a desert where there is no water. He uses his power to grow seeds into oases. Meanwhile, Valerian's jet pack is unusable and he is trapped at the bottom of the cavern.

Most of the heroes get past the most difficult phases. Irmgaal has a meal, though his sword overcooks it. Ortzog unbuttons his clothing, saying he needs to get a larger size...
