Summary

Yuki receives a phone call from her aunt, telling her that her father has been in a car accident. He dies shortly thereafter. She then sees a typist at The Paper reading a magazine with Odile on the cover. Yuki is now twenty-three. She talks with Edison about feeling like a failure as an artist. As Edison walks Yuki back to The Paper after lunch, they encounter a display of televisions in a shop window showing the evacuation of the American embassy in Saigon. An American soldier is pulling a white man to safety in a helicopter, leaving behind a sea of imperiled Vietnamese. The sight makes her angry, then anxious. She fights back a panic attack, and flees from a worried Edison to go swimming at the YMCA.
