Summary

In Chapter 46, Sallie learns that the Bonds “bombed the Emporium” (283). Although not everything is destroyed, Sallie decides to retaliate. She procures a plane and bombs the Bonds’ front yard with Rawley’s help. In the car afterwards, she and Rawley kiss. Back at the house, they have sex in the carriage house (289).

In Chapter 47, Sallie and Rawley work on the Emporium repairs. They have continued seeing each other in secret. Then one day, Rawley proposes. Sallie says she has “a lot to think about” before accepting (293).

In Chapter 48, Sallie and Rawley attend Georgette’s New Year’s Eve party (294). After Georgette introduces Sallie to her husband Gus, Gus tells Sallie that Georgette is just using her as her pet.

Later, Georgette takes Sallie aside and warns her against marrying Rawley. She does not think Rawley can give her anything...
