Summary

In Part IV, Chapter 13, David remembers his daughter’s birth. A week before she was born, “a prophet visited [his] church” (193). He prophesied that David’s miracle would come that week. David assumed he was talking about the baby because the dancer was late. In retrospect, David realizes he has always looked for magic in his life.

David travels to Darien, Connecticut for an event hosted by Scott Smith. Waiting for things to begin, David continues thinking about his daughter’s birth. He also reflects on the developing campaign and chats with Beverly and Wilson. Finally the event starts and the campaign manager gives a lengthy speech.

David’s mind wanders. Before his daughter’s birth, he experimented with music. He started singing harmony at clubs with his friends Rachel and Patrick. He “was rarely paid” but enjoyed the gigs (203).
