Summary

In Chapter 12, Lois and Susan buy an air conditioner. Susan stays in the car and thinks about how to describe Lois. Lois says they will need a Mexican to carry the air conditioner into the house. The word Mexican makes Susan think about her first boyfriend Gustavo. Lois’ tone reminds Susan of their perpetually difficult relationship. They drive to Lois' shop so Susan can meet Marianne. Marianne says her husband will love Susan. Susan still cannot understand why Lois loves her shop.

In Chapter 13, Daniel continues working on his chairs and writing Susan’s letter. He tells Susan his mistrust for Linda was like a worm, that it grew into a "black snake” (117).
